Despite the Covid restrictions on Sunday 8th November Chilton remembered their fallen in a scaled-down but very poignant manner that reverantly marked Remembrance Sunday whilst keeping to social distancing requirements. The Bishops Pipers played suitable laments in honour of the village’s fallen heroes. Our local veteran Geoffrey Wheadon solemnly read the Exhortation then local resident, Simon Howe, kindly performed the Last Post and two minutes silence were observed, in memory of all those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Then the Bishops Pipers sounded Reveille and Geoffrey Wheadon again addressed the socially distanced gathering with the Kohima Epitaph.
Poppy wreaths were then laid by various organisation’s and people from within the Chilton Community.
The Town Council would like to thank all those who supported the event, including those who observed the silence from their own homes and doorsteps, and participated in the “Every Poppy Counts” campaign.
Special thanks are owed to those who met with the Town Council prior to Remembrance Sunday to help ensure that this year’s Covid restrictions did not affect our ability as a community to undertake the Act of Remembrance in a befitting manner, including Christine Potts (Local Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal Organiser), Benny Hewitt, James Wayne Moffatt and The Friends of Chilton Academy for their amazing knitted poppies.
