Picture kindly supplied by the Northern Echo

 Chilton Skate Park

The Town Council were saddened to hear from a local youngster on Friday 11th November 2011 at 4.20pm that the newly installed Skate Park had been maliciously vandalised.

On arrival on site it was apparent that large volumes of oil had been poured and spread all over the facility which is now deemed unfit to use until the Council investigate methods, cost and timescales to rectify.  Please do not allow your children to use the facility as it is unsafe.

The police have been notified and attended the scene and are now investigating.  Meanwhile if anyone has any information the Town Council would like to urge people to contact the police in confidence on 0345 60 60 365 or the Town Council on 01388 721788 option 2.

The Town Clerk, Mr Paul Gray said the Council are disgusted with this act of criminal damage and are offering a substantial reward leading to the conviction of the culprit (s).  Whoever has done this has deliberately set about preventing children from Chilton from enjoying their facilities and this not acceptable.  The Town Council were already in the process of installing the C.C.T.V. camera however, this incident has now proved the need for the C.C.T.V. to be operational as soon as possible.

As yet the project is NOT completed as the fencing, CCTV, floodlighting and signage still needs to be completed before the facility is officially opened. However, those involved with the project are aware that the youngsters are eager to use the facility and have been doing so whilst the project has been under construction.  It would be appreciated if users could refrain from the using the facility until it is complete.  It is hoped that there will be an official opening, details to be published.
In the interest of safety may we remind users and ask parents/guardians to urge youngsters to where safety helmets, elbow and shin pads when using this equipment.
We hope that users really enjoy using the facility but remind them to do so safely and at the same time look after the equipment.

Chilton Couple Celebrate Their Diamond Wedding Anniversary

Well-known local couple Ray and Joan Sutton celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary on Thursday 28th July – that’s 60 years of married life together!  They met in the late ‘40s when they both worked at United buses. In-between stints at United, Ray had been a forces man.
He started working for United in 1940 but in 1943 he volunteered for the Air Crew in the RAF.  With the end of the war imminent though, he was retrained as a motor mechanic and sent to Egypt. Meanwhile, in 1945 Joan started work for United in the wages department, and when Ray
returned from duty in 1947 the pair met and the rest, they say, is history.  Ray continued to work for United for 10 years, leaving for Bakelite at Newton Aycliffe where he worked for 30 years. Joan stayed with United until she left to have a family.
After they were married the couple scrimped and saved everything they could for a deposit on a lovely home in The Crescent, Chilton.  They still reside in that same home today, which is full of happy memories. In 1963 Joan returned to work as a Nanny at Chilton Infant School, where she was loved for 23 years.  The sprightly couple have two children, Gillian and Peter, and have five grand-children and one great grandchild, with another on the way!
Throughout their long lives they have both been very active – Ray a keen walker and Joan an active athlete and gymnast.  Ray has completed many walks – the 200 mile Coast to Coast, the Three Peaks, Carlisle & Settle Railway, The Cleveland Way and The Pembrokeshire Coaster are among his many achievements.  Joan ran competitively for Darlington Harriers and also enjoyed gymnastics, netball and keep fit – which she has done from 16 to 70 years-old. Indeed she has even represented Durham Keep Fit Association at the Royal Albert Hall.
Joan still keeps busy at flower arranging classes.  She has also ran Age Concern at Chilton for 30 years and has been assistant verger at St. Aidan’s Church for the last 10 years, being very much involved in all the functions of the church.  The couple love their holidays together, both at home and abroad. They have holidayed around most of Europe and have been as far afield as Cape Town and the USA.  On their Golden Wedding Anniversary ten years ago, they celebrated with a wonderful trip to New York. They were fortunate enough to leave just in time before the tragic events of 9/11 and are hoping that their Diamond Wedding Celebration will be remembered for better reasons.
Ray and Joan entertained more than 60 guests at their home in The Crescent, Chilton, last Thursday, and on Saturday enjoyed a meal with close family and special friends at The Toby in Wolviston. The Mayor of Chilton, Maureen Errington presented Mr & Mrs Sutton a bouquet of flowers to celebrate their Diamond Wedding Anniversary, congratulations.

The Mayor's Christmas Message

In May I was honoured to be elected as the Mayor of Chilton for the forthcoming civic year.  Whilst in office I decided to fund raise for The Stroke Association and James Cook Hospital (Botulinum Toxin Department) both charities are very important to me and many others.  In addition I am also raising funds for the Chilton Xmas Lights Appeal.  As many of you are aware the Christmas lights which align our main street are funded purely by donations and not by the rate payer.  To date I have held a number of fund-raising  events which have been extremely successful. I would like to thank everyone for their fantastic support.   I would like to invite readers to a Valentines Charity Night on 11th February 2011 at Chilton Workingmen’s Club commencing at 7.00pm (tickets are £3 and are on sale at the Town Council and Chilton WMC).  Following this I will be hosting the Mayors Civic Dinner on 22nd April 2010, further details to be advertised in the New Year.

Since becoming Mayor, I have had the pleasure of meeting lots of interesting people and attended a variety of events.  I have thoroughly enjoyed representing Chilton and will have some wonderful memories once my term in office ends.  I had the privilege of attending The Freedom Parade and presentation at Stockton following the Rifles return from Afghanistan and the event was extremely emotional but wonderful to see.    This year’s service at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday was a personal highlight for me.  As usual a large number of residents attended the service and this year as the wreaths were laid Simon Howe (aged 15) kindly agreed to play the Last Post on the coronet which seemed to make the service even more poignant.  I also really enjoyed the Christmas Lights Switch on and was delighted when the Miss Chilton winner, Courtney Nelson and Gala Princess winner Phoebe Naylor agreed to perform the official switch on with me.

I am very proud to be representing Chilton and feel that we should all be proud of our Town.  Since the creation of the bypass I feel that the Town’s residents are no longer divided by the once busy main road and that the Community spirit has been reignited and I feel this shows on occasions includ ing; Miner’s Gala Parade, Town’s Gala, Remembrance Sunday and the Christmas Lights Switch On when large numbers of residents turn out to show their support.  As a Councillor over the year I have received lots of favourable comments regarding the Town’s fantastic floral displays and winning a Silver Award for Best Small Town in the Northumbria in Bloom competition and more recently the Christmas Lights.

Another organisation with whom I work very closely with is the Chilton1st Cub Scouts.  I first started working with them 38 years ago when my own children were young and was very pleased when local residents decided to set up again in Chilton.  I personally believe that our local youngsters should be given the opportunity to try new experiences.  The group has grown from strength to strength and is always looking for new members.  The group meet weekly at St Aidan’s Church Hall on a Wednesday at 6.30pm – 8.00pm and is open to both girls and boys aged 8 – 10 years.
On my final note I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Councillor Margaret Walton, Mayor.

Chilton Mini Market

Chilton Market

Over the last couple of year’s members of the Town Council have listened to residents concerns over the lack of shops within the Town offering a variety of fresh and available produce.  Members have repeatedly expressed the need for a weekly market offering fresh produce. This finally came to fruition at the beginning of August when the first stall committed to a weekly market.  Pick of the Crop the fruit and vegetable stall have attended every Thursday since and due to demand are now also coming on a Saturday.

Premier Meats soon followed and attend on a Thursday selling fresh meat from a fully refrigerated van. Pick of the Crop generally open their stall from 8am with Premier Meats opening from 8.45am.
To date demand and popularity of the market seems to be very positive.  We have secured fish monger "Lee's Fresh Fish" who will also be attending on Thursdays.
In order to keep the market an ongoing success Paul Gray, Town Clerk would like to urge residents to support the initiative.
Mark Whittaker, MD of Premier Meats – “We are delighted to attend Chilton market each week and would like to thank all customers for their support and warm reception so far.
We will continue to offer our excellent meat at realistic prices and look forward to supplying you all in the future” Paul & Martin, Pick of the Crop – “We really appreciated the offer from the Town Council to hold
a weekly market at Chilton".  Since starting in August the stall has proven to very popular and due to demand we are now attending on Saturdays.  We would both like to thank all our customers for supporting  us.

Congratulations

The Mayor's Christmas Message

Len Potts

First of all I would like to wish everyone a very happy and peaceful Christmas. It has been quite a busy year for the Town Council and next year will be just as busy.
We had a very successful Gala Day, which was very well attended and thankfully, the weather played its part. The Pentland’s Play Area was installed and opened and is being well used. Due to the many hours put in by the Christmas Lights Committee, we have managed to keep upgrading the Christmas display in the Main Street, particularly our new LED Christmas Tree and thanks must also go to Dalkia, who helped with a kind donation.
As you may know Dalkia are about to build a new energy centre in Chilton which will be of great benefit to the whole community. Work on that project is about to start and an official Ground Breaking Ceremony will take place early in the New Year.
I’m sure you will agree that the floral displays in the Town this year have been exceptional and thanks to the efforts of all those involved Chilton was awarded a silver merit for best small town and a silver merit for the Miners Welfare Recreation Ground. Thanks to assistance from children at Chilton Primary and Chilton 1st Cubs there will be an array of colour in the spring with the bulbs that  they planted . Everything that we do as a Council, can't be done without your ongoing support and the support of our County Councillor’s and I hope that this will long continue.
Finally can I thank you for the fantastic support you have given to my main Charity, which is 'Help for Heroes' A cause close to my heart as a former regular soldier.
