I was born in Shildon in 1937 and was one of eight children. My father died when I was seven years old and my mother raised us. I was educated at Eldon Infant and Junior School and then Auckland Park Boy's School. I have lived in Chilton for the last 37 years.
I started work at Dean and Chapter Colliery and remained there until the pits closed. From there I went to work at Cortaulds Textile Factory until it was closed. I was them employed by Sedgefield Borough Council.
I am Chairman of Sedgefield Local Council Committee and am on the Durham County Local Council's Executive Committee. I am Secretary of Chilton and Windlestone Workingmen's Club.
I have been a member of Chilton Town Council since September 1975 and had the honour of attending the Royal Garden Party. I have been Chairman of the Council several times and was very proud to be elected as the first Mayor to represent Chilton.
