Saturday 19th July saw droves of local people turn out for the much awaited Chilton Gala Day. Most people including those in period dress from Yesterday’s Heroes followed the parade lead by the Pipes and Drums of the Northern World War II Association from the Town Square onto Chilton Primary School field. In the centre of the field was an arena where various performances and displays took place much to the delight of the performers and the audience. Many involved were local including the dancers from the Melanie Edmenson Dance School and the members of Chilton Chungdokwan Taekwondo. In attendance and staying overnight on the school field in a purpose built WW2 camp were Yesterday Hero’s complete in period dress. They enthralled the crowd with their firing display and staged battle dressed as English, German and American soldiers. A much visited attraction on the day was Ridgeside Falconry who brought along various birds of prey. Once in the arena members of the audience were invited to participate. This was followed by a flying display from “Titch” who decided to do a disappearing act for 10 minutes fortunately much to his owner’s delight he did return. Youngsters seemed very happy to take advantage of the fun fair rides, rodeo bull, millennium slide, bouncy castle and the TA were very busy assisting the climbers on the climbing wall. In the marquee both the balloon modeller and the face painter had streams of excited children anxiously waiting their turn.
A Nintendo competition ran throughout the day and both winners were very happy to receive their prize. Keone Neasham in the 11 years and under category won a Nintendo DS Lite plus game and accessory pack and Andrew Barrons in the 12 years + category won a Nintendo Wii + Sonic & Mario at the Olympic Games Around the field was a display of restored classic Mini cars plus other cars along with a vintage United bus. Also on the field were a number of stalls were you could make purchases such as baby items, jewellery etc of visit one of the many fundraising stalls. Refreshments, food, sweets and ice-creams were also available.A special thank you to everyone who assisted with the Gala Day including all those who participated in the arena, brought along displays, stalls and attractions, provided their services and volunteers.
